Part 2 – Charismatics – Bible Study

Part 2

Bible Study Course

The Charismatic Movement

Welcome to the Liberty Bible Course, Charismatic Movement, Part 2. Is the Charismatic Movement an end-time outpouring of blessing, or is it an end-time deception? Part 2 begins with looking at the matter of tongues. This study is written to be used with the KING JAMES VERSION of the Bible, otherwise your answers are going to be incorrect. Please get your Bible, and begin another exciting study in God’s Word that just might change your life!

Note: In Part 1, we covered the following points:

I. Is The Charismatic Doctrine Of Salvation Correct?

No, because the majority of Charismatics believe that salvation can be lost. Their emphasis is really upon the works that a person does for Jesus, not His finished work on the cross. Please read Matthew 7:22, 23 to see the exact emphasis of the Charismatic movement: prophesying in Jesus’ name; casting out devils in Jesus’ name; and doing wonderful works (miracles) in Jesus’ name. When those people stand before Jesus one day, He will say, “I never knew you.”

II. Is The Charismatic Treatment Of The Holy Spirit Correct?

No, because the Holy Spirit is treated more like a force, than a Holy Person of the Trinity. Their behavior of acting drunk in the Spirit and slain in the Spirit, is not holy behavior, but fleshly, evil behavior. The things that they attribute to the Holy Spirit, are actually things that are evidenced by demon-possessed people in the New Testament.

III. Is The Charismatic Doctrine Of Tongues Correct?

Note: Once again, the Scriptures will clearly show that the Charismatic doctrine of tongues is contrary to what the Bible teaches.

Chapter 1

A. The reason for tongues (different languages) in the world.

1. Please read Genesis 11:1-9, and answer the following questions.

a. Verse 1 says, “And the whole earth was of ______ language, and of ______ speech.”

Note: When God first created man and woman, they obviously could communicate with one another; and when God gave them children, those children then learned that same language. Everyone upon earth spoke the same language.

b. Verse 4 says, “And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose ______ may reach unto ____________; and let us make us a ________, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.”

Note: We see that pride was welling up in the hearts of the people. They wanted to do a huge project that could be seen from a great distance, and thus make themselves a name.

c. Verse 6 says, “And the LORD said, Behold, the people is ______, and they have all ______ language; and this they begin to do: and now ______________ will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.”

d. Verse 7 shows us what God decided to do, “Go to, let us go down, and there ________________ their language, that they may ______ understand one another’s speech.”

e. Verses 8 and 9 show us that is exactly what the Lord did, “So the LORD __________________ them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the ________________ of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.”

The changing of the one language upon earth,

into many, was the result of pride and rebellion

(made easier through the ability of all people to communicate with one another).

Note: This is a very interesting and important point in regard to the Charismatic movement. They claim that language is not a barrier to them any more. They claim that they can speak in other languages that they have not had to learn.

What is so interesting about this comparison, is that it is the

Charismatic movement that is at the forefront now with the cry,

“Break down denominational walls and barriers that separate us! We are all one!”

They claim to have the gift that breaks the language barrier (tongues),

and what do they immediately want? To become ONE with EVERYONE,

despite the obvious differences in beliefs. That is rebellion

against what God has taught in His Word.

Note: Denominational names are much more than names that were picked out of a hat. They are names which stand for doctrinal beliefs. The word doctrine means “teaching.” In the case of true born-again Christians, it means, “Bible teaching.”

To break down denominational barriers

would require that Christians would break down

or count unimportant what the Bible teaches.

2. I Timothy 1:2, 3 says, “Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord. As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they __________ no other ________________.”

3. Titus 2:1 says, “But speak thou the things which become __________ doctrine.”

4. II John 9-11 says, “Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the ________________ of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the ________________ of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. If there come any unto you, and bring not this ________________, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.”

5. II Timothy 3:16 says, “All __________________ is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for ________________, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”

6. II Timothy 4:2-4 says, “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and ________________. For the time will come when they will not endure __________ doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the __________, and shall be turned unto fables.”

Denominational names stand for different doctrinal beliefs.

They either stand for correct Bible interpretation,

or incorrect Bible interpretation.

Correct doctrine is very important to God.

7. II Timothy 2:15 says, “__________ to show thyself ________________ unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, ______________ dividing the word of truth.”

Note: The Charismatics have deceived themselves into thinking that they have broken the language barrier that God designed at the Tower of Babel. And in the process, they (the Charismatics) have shown that nothing has changed since the Tower of Babel — if man could break the language barrier, he would yoke up with everyone once again, and rebel against what God has said. What has not changed is man’s evil heart.

8. Jeremiah 17:9 says, “The __________ is deceitful above all things, and desperately ____________: who can know it?”

9. Matthew 12:34 says, “…out of the abundance of the __________ the __________ speaketh.”

10. I Corinthians 15:33 says, “Be not deceived: ________ communications corrupt ________ manners.”

Note: Evil hearts produce evil mouths, which in turn produce evil communications. Language is a powerful tool for good, but also a powerful tool for evil.

Illustration: That is a very large problem with the jail system of today. Getting that many people together who have committed crimes; coupled with their ability to then communicate with each other for months, and oftentimes for years; thoroughly corrupts the good manners of many. At one time (and it still may be the case), it was found that something like 80% of the people in jail would be back in jail one day for worse crimes than they committed to get in the first time. There are obviously many factors involved, but one of them is clear: spend enough time communicating with evil people, and it is easy to become evil (or more evil) yourself.

Proverbs 13:20 says, “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a __________________ of fools shall be __________________.”

God never ordained the jail system as we know it today. Please refer to the Bible Course on Hell, #BC-E-104, for the Scriptures showing what God has said to do with people who commit crimes.

Note: So the people upon the earth had to be separated, but why did God not just physically force them apart for a while into different locations? Why make life so difficult? The answer is because if God would have just moved them apart, it would not have been long before they were back together again, and in greater rebellion.

When God confounded the language

of all mankind, He did something that would

basically renew itself every generation.

11. Nehemiah 13:23, 24 shows this fact. “In those days also saw I Jews that had married wives of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab: And their ________________ spake half in the speech of Ashdod, and could ______ speak in the ________ language, but according to the language of each people.”

Note: You can see how powerful, different influences are in that passage; and how in one generation, a language can be lost. When God confounded the languages of the people at Babel, it was not just something that would separate those people in that day, but also the people of the earth until the end of time.

12. But this language barrier also makes it hard to fulfill God’s command to us in Matthew 28:18-20, “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and __________ all ______________, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

Note: Children are prone to speak in the language where they live. If missionaries do not speak in English in their homes, then their small children will not know English. If their children do learn English, but God calls them to live a different place when they get married, then the grandchildren of the original missionary will not know the foreign language.

13. Every generation needs those who are sensitive to God’s leading, and will respond to His call, as is seen in Romans 10:13-15, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they ______________ in him of whom they have not __________? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be ________? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!”
