Welcome to the Liberty Bible Course dealing with the Charismatic Movement. Is it an end-time outpouring of blessing? Or is it an end-time deception? This study is written to be used with the KING JAMES VERSION of the Bible, otherwise your answers are going to be wrong. Chapter 1
I. Is The Charismatic Doctrine Of Salvation Correct?
Note: The FIRST DOCTRINE to always check out in regard to any religious group, is the DOCTRINE OF SALVATION. If a religious group is in error on the matter of salvation, then they are not going to understand other doctrines of the Bible correctly, either. The doctrine of salvation is the KEY DOCTRINE, as the verse below explains.
1. I Corinthians 2:14 says, “But the ______________ man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he _______ them, because they are ______________________ discerned.”
Note: The “natural” man is referring to an “unsaved” man. He does not understand spiritual matters, because he is still in his “natural” or “lost” condition.
2. Jude 3 says, “Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common __________________, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should __________________ contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.”
We are told to “earnestly contend” for the matter of
salvation. EVERY POINT of the doctrine of salvation
is important. We are living in a day when many are
telling the crowds to “drop doctrinal differences.”
That is the EXACT OPPOSITE of what the Bible
teaches. We must teach and defend exactly what
the Bible teaches about salvation. It is the
difference between heaven and hell.
Note: As with studying any religious group and its beliefs, you are going to find differences of beliefs in the individuals who are a part of that group. So when studying a group which has no official governing body, you must take the statements and beliefs of those who are in high leadership positions within that movement, as the official beliefs of that movement. They are the ones leading the group, and so it is going to be their doctrines that form the foundation for that group and its future direction.
A. Salvation does NOT depend upon our works for God, but upon Jesus’ finished work on the cross for us.
1. Matthew 7:22 says, “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not ____________________ in thy name? and in thy name have cast out ____________? and in thy name done many wonderful __________?”
In the verses above, we see the
EXACT THREEFOLD EMPHASIS
of the Charismatic Movement:
#1 — Prophesying in Jesus’ name.
#2 — Casting out devils in Jesus’ name.
#3 — Doing wonderful works (miracles) in Jesus’ name.
2. Please notice in the next verse, verse 23, what the Lord says to those people, “And then will I profess unto them, I __________ knew you: ____________ from me, ye that work ________________.”
Note: It is very clear that those people were never saved.
The Lord does NOT say to them, “I now refuse to
acknowledge you as my children anymore.
What He says is, “I NEVER knew you.”
There never was a time when the Lord knew
them as His children. There never was a time
when they were saved.
Note: This may seem incredible to some, that these people are not saved, even though they seem to do such great religious works.
First, they will have prophesied in Jesus’ name. Can someone speak forth God’s Word, and not even be saved himself? Can someone claim to be receiving a Word from God, and not even be saved herself? Can someone go all around talking about Jesus, and not even truly be saved? According to the above verses, the answer to all of these questions is, “Yes, it is possible to do all of those things in Jesus’ name, and not truly be saved.”
“Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord,
have we not PROPHESIED in thy name?
…And then will I profess unto them, I NEVER KNEW YOU:
depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”
Second, they will have cast out devils in Jesus’ name. Can a person claim to have cast out a devil, and not even truly be saved himself? Can a person who claims to have a ministry of casting out demons, not even actually be saved herself? According to the above verses, the answer to all of these questions is, “Yes, it is possible to do all of those things, and not truly be saved.”
“And in thy name have CAST OUT DEVILS?
…And then will I profess unto them, I NEVER KNEW YOU:
depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”
Third, they will claim to have done many wonderful works in Jesus’ name. Can a person claim to do a miracle, but actually not even really be saved himself? Can a person that appears to have a ministry of doing miracles in Jesus’ name, not even really be saved herself? According to the above verses, the answer to all of these questions is, “Yes, it is possible to do all of those things, and not truly be saved.”
“And in thy name done many WONDERFUL WORKS?
…And then will I profess unto them, I NEVER KNEW YOU:
depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”
Note: Please be careful to note that these three things are the EXACT and MAJOR emphasis of the Charismatic Movement today.
“Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity” (Matthew 7:22,23).
These verses make it very clear that people are going to stand before God
PLEADING TO GET INTO HEAVEN, CITING THESE VERY THREE THINGS
AS PROOF OF THEIR SALVATION — but God is going to tell them to
DEPART FROM HIM, and they are going to be cast into hell.
3. Please notice the AMOUNT of people in verse 22 who are going to stand before God and make this same plea, “________ will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not…”
We are not talking about a FEW people here,
but MANY. Many people are going to stand
before God one day, and plead that they should be
allowed into heaven, based upon the things that they
have done for God. But they are going to be
told by Jesus, “I never knew you:
depart from me, ye that work iniquity” (verse 23).
Note: What is their problem? What has happened to these people? How can so many people seemingly be so religious, but not really even be saved?
4. The answer to the above question is found in Titus 3:4-7, “But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by __________ of __________________________ which ____ have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our ______________; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
The problem with these people is that they stand
before God maintaining that they are worthy to enter
into heaven BASED UPON THEIR OWN GOOD WORKS
— not based upon Jesus’ finished work on the cross.
Note: Notice carefully the contents of their plea to enter into heaven. “Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?”
Their plea is, “Have WE not… prophesied in thy name?” “Have WE not… cast out devils?” “Have WE not… done many wonderful works?”
They do not stand there humbly pleading the blood of
the Lord Jesus Christ shed for their sins, as their only
merit to enter into heaven. They stand there making a
PLEA BASED UPON THEIR OWN RELIGIOUS WORKS.
5. Ephesians 2:8,9 says, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that ______ of ____________________: it is the gift of God: ______ of __________, lest any man should boast.”
6. Ephesians 1:7 says, “In whom we have redemption through his __________, the ____________________ of sins, according to the riches of his grace.”
Note: The sad truth is that many religious people are depending upon their own display of religious deeds to gain them entrance into heaven one day. But when a person is depending upon his or her own good works to enter into heaven, the Bible does not call them “good works.” Look at the next verse to see what they are called.
7. Matthew 7:22,23 says, “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work ________________.”
When a person is looking to his own good works
as his merit of entering into heaven,
those works are called “INIQUITY.”
Note: The word “iniquity” is defined as “wickedness, an act of sin” (Merriam Webster’s Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary).
8. Isaiah 64:6 tells us, “But we are all as an unclean thing, and all ______ ______________________________ are as ____________ rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.”
9. Mark 10:18 says, “And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is ________ good but ______, that is, ______.”
Question: In what are you trusting? Is your trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, and IN HIM ALONE for your salvation? Or do you base your salvation upon your own religious deeds?
If someone were to ask, “If you were to die today,
are you 100% sure that you would go to heaven?”
What would you answer?
Would you say, “Yes, I am sure that I am going
to heaven, because I have spoken in tongues”?
Would you say,
“Yes, I would go to heaven, because I have been
filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied”?
Would you say, “Why, yes, I would go to heaven,
because I have done miracles”?
Would you say, “Yes, I would go to heaven,
because I have been baptized”?
Would you say, “Yes, I would go to heaven,
because I have joined the church”?
Would you say, “Yes, I would go to heaven,
because I am a deacon”?
Would you say, “Yes, I would go to heaven,
because I have taught Sunday School for years”?
Note: Think about it seriously. What comes to your mind FIRST, when you think about whether you are going to heaven, or not?
Does something come to your mind WHICH YOU HAVE DONE FOR GOD? Or does something come to your mind WHICH GOD HAS DONE FOR YOU?
The difference between those two is the difference between eternity in heaven — or eternity in hell.
If you go to heaven when you die, it will not be because
of anything which you have done for God. It will be
because of what God has done for you through His Son,
the Lord Jesus Christ, when He died on the cross,
and because you placed your faith in Him,
and IN HIM ALONE to save you.
10. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he ________ his only begotten Son, that whosoever __________________ in him should not perish, but have ______________________ life.”
11. Romans 10:9,10 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt ______________ in thine __________ that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
12. Luke 13:3 says, “I tell you, Nay: but, except ye ___________, ye shall all likewise perish.”
Note: Repentance is NOT you cleaning up yourself. It is the heart desire for GOD TO CLEANSE YOU AND CHANGE YOUR LIFE.
13. John 1:12 says, “But as many as ________________ him, to them gave he __________ to become the sons of God, even to them that ______________ on his name.”
A. Salvation does NOT depend upon our works for God, but upon Jesus’ finshed work on the cross for us.
B. Salvation can NEVER be lost, even when we sin, because our salvation depends upon Jesus’ righteousness, not our own.
1. I John 2:1 makes it very clear that God does NOT want us to sin. “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye ______ ______.”
2. So what happens when we do sin? I John 2:1,2 tells us, “And if any ______ sin, we have an ________________ with the Father, __________ ____________ the __________________: And he is the ________________________ for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”
It is God’s will that we NOT sin. When we do sin,
we do not lose our salvation, because our salvation
is not based upon our works. Our salvation is
based upon Jesus’ righteousness. Jesus is our
Advocate (the one who pleads on our behalf).
Jesus is our propitiation (the satisfaction) for our sins.
3. II Corinthians 5:21 says, “For he hath made ______ to be ______ for ____, who knew no sin; that we might be made the __________________________ of ______ in him.”
Our salvation cannot be lost, because it depends upon
the righteousness of Jesus Christ — not ours.
Jesus Christ never changes. He has never sinned,
and never will sin. Thus, our salvation is secure.
4. Hebrews 13:8 says, “__________ ____________ the ________ yesterday, and to day, and for ________.”
5. Hebrews 7:25 tells us, “Wherefore he is able also to ________ them to the __________________ that come unto God by him, seeing he ever ____________ to make intercession for them.”
When someone says that he can lose his salvation,
then his problem is that HE IS NOT FULLY TRUSTING
IN THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, BUT IS ACTUALLY
TRUSTING IN HIS OWN WORKS to keep him saved.
6. Galatians 3:2,3 says, “This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the ______, or by the hearing of __________? Are ye so foolish? having begun in the ____________, are ye now made perfect by the __________?”
Note: While some Charismatics do believe in the eternal security and salvation of the believer, the overwhelming majority of them do not. That means that the majority of them are trusting in their own religious works to be saved or to keep saved.
Remember Matthew 7:22,23 so clearly gives the exact three things that the Charismatics emphasize? “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not PROPHESIED in thy name? and in thy name have CAST OUT DEVILS? and in thy name DONE MANY WONDERFUL WORKS? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”
This clearly shows us that many Charismatics are not trusting in the finished work of Jesus Christ to get them into heaven, but are trusting in their own religious works. Sadly, many of them are going to realize that — only too late.
Question: How about you? Is your TOTAL TRUST really in the Lord Jesus Christ? Or is it in the things that you are doing for God?
7. John 6:37 says, “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that ____________ to me I will in ____ wise ________ out.”
Some foolishly respond to that verse, “I know that He
will not CAST me out, but I can FALL out myself!”
Such a person is testifying right there that his
hope for salvation is RESTING UPON HIMSELF.
He believes that if he is good, then he will end up
going to heaven. And he believes that if he sins,
then he will be lost, and go to hell. By his own
mouth he is confessing that his hope of salvation
rests upon his own works.
8. John 6:39 tells us that no one who is truly saved can “fall out” on his own, because that would mean that Jesus would lose some of His children. “And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should ________ ______________, but should raise it up again at the last day.”
Jesus promises that He will NEVER CAST OUT
any of His children, and He also promises that He will
NEVER LOSE any of His children. Our salvation is
truly secure in the Lord Jesus Christ.
9. Hebrews 13:5 says, “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will __________ leave thee, nor ______________ thee.”
A. Salvation does NOT depend upon our works for God, but upon Jesus’ finshed work on the cross for us.
B. Salvation can NEVER be lost, even when we sin, because our salvation depends upon Jesus’ righteousness, not our own.
C. Salvation is MORE THAN just repeating a name, but is a decision of the heart that is then confessed with the mouth.
1. Romans 10:9-13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy __________ the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine __________ that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be __________. For with the __________ man believeth unto righteousness; and with the __________ confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Note: Remember Matthew 7:22,23? Those people frequently talk about the Lord.
2. “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy ________? and in thy ________ have cast out devils? and in thy ________ done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”
As is seen above, using the Lord’s name often,
even in a good sense, does not make a person saved.
Those people talked about the Lord all of the time,
but they still found themselves cast into hell.
Note: Make sure that you are not just repeating a name with your lips, but that you actually know the Lord Jesus Christ personally as your Savior; by repenting of your sin, and placing your faith totally in Him alone to save you and to keep you saved.
REVIEW:
